2009 was a pretty lousy year for me and mine. Our cat died and our friend died, and it's hard to tell which was harder to deal with (does it make me a horrible person to say that?). I got called back to my old job after an exciting and far-too-brief term elsewhere, and my desire to actually do the job decreased dramatically. There was family drama. I got guilted into taking on too many responsibilities and then felt bad when I couldn't handle them all. And then felt resentful and pissy at people making demands. I got into a cycle of feeling lousy/eating junk food/feeling lousy/not going to the gym/feeling lousy/etc. that did wonders for neither my physical fitness nor my body image. Summer kind of sucked, meteorologically.

So I bid farewell to 2009 without the slightest trace of regret. Sayonara, 2009! Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Well, to be fair, there was some good stuff in 2009. We went to Cuba with fairplaythings ' parents, which was much less stressful than you would imagine. And we went to my very first Worldcon, Anticipation in Montreal, where I got to meet Elizabeth Bear and Elisabeth Vonarburg, and learned that my French vocabulary really goes downhill when I'm being a dribbling fangirl. And I made some good progress on writing regularly, at least up until I got overburdened and stressed out. It's just that the crummy stuff seemed to take over and overwhelm the good stuff, especially in the second half of the year.

So far, 2010 does not much resemble 2009.

I've been going to the gym regularly again, which is probably directly related to a distinct improvement in my mood.
I have stepped away from some of the extracurricular stuff that was overburdening me and stressing me out, and have put more energy into other things.*
I have a new job. I'm kind of afraid to say anything about it, for fear of jinxing it, but so far it doesn't suck. I actually kind of like it.

I don't know what the odds are that things will continue to Not Suck, but I could really do with a Good Year. Or at least a Good Several Months, I'm not too demanding.

Fingers crossed?

*I've signed up for a Lifeguarding course in March, so that we'll be able to do water-related things with the Pathfinders (assuming I pass, of course)
