Plans, not resolutions

It's January, it's snowing outside... it must be time to think about triathlons!

Last year, I completed a half-Ironman. I trained hard (although, since I also have a million other activities to keep me busy, not as hard as a really serious athlete would have trained), and I finished, upright and smiling, which was the whole point. It was a great feeling. But, of course, I promptly started figuring out what my next goal was going to be.

This year, I want to focus on shorter races, and on getting my time down. I'm consistently one of the last to finish races, especially longer ones. This doesn't really bother me, exactly, but it does essentially limit what I can do. I was only able to do the Half because they were running a full Ironman at the same time, so the course was open long enough for me to complete it. I'll never be able to do a full Ironman myself unless I get my bike speed up considerably (and am I seriously thinking that, if I can do that, I can do a full Ironman? I must be insane. Triathlons make you insane: this is absolute proof).

So. This year: speed. I think that probably means mostly sprints. There's a race in Sydenham, where my sister lives, that we've agreed to do with my sister and her husband. She wants to do the Olympic, so I need to decide if I want to be in the same race (oh, she'll whip my butt -- she's much faster than me, not to mention much slimmer, even after having had a baby. We only hate her a little bit.), or if I want to do the Sprint. An Olympic is, to be totally honest, much more satisfying... but a Sprint fits better with my stated goals for the year. But on the other hand, it would be good to have one longer "goal" race to get focused for... and not being completely humiliated by my sister would be a good motivator. Decisions, decisions.

My plan for achieving my increased speed is simple: once the snow melts, I'm going to start biking to work (bus strike or no bus strike). Since I currently work an hour away from home, this is bound to improve my biking skills. Must find the showers, though.  And in the meantime, I am going to be as obsessive as I can be about hitting the gym, and just getting in a run and a bike regularly.

So there we go. Plans, not resolutions. We don't do resolutions around here. ;)
